General Anesthesia for Kids Near You

Is your child anxious about going to the dentist? At Gateway Dentistry Group, we recognize that some kids are afraid or have trouble staying still. That is why we provide general anesthesia for kids in Grande Prairie to calm them down and make them feel at ease during their dental procedure.

What Is General Anesthesia?

General anesthesia functions as a particular medication that allows your child to have deep sleep during dental treatment. Your child stays completely unaware of the procedure because they will not recall anything, and they will feel no pain while they sleep.

When Do Kids Need General Anesthesia?

Our dentist can recommend general anesthesia if:

  • Your child requires a lot of dental work
  • Your child cannot sit still for dental treatment
  • Your child is extremely nervous or fearful of the dentist
  • Your child has some special medical or developmental requirements
  • Your child does not do well with local anesthetics

Each child is unique. We will consider a thorough assessment of your child’s health and needs prior to making any decision. We use general anesthesia only when it is most appropriate for the intervention of your child.

Before the Dental Appointment

Prior to every dental treatment, we meet with you to:

  • Review your child’s health and medical history.
  • Answer your questions.
  • Provide instructions about eating and drinking (usually no food for some hours before the appointment).
  • Explain what will happen on the day of the procedure

It is very important to follow all instructions given to you by our practitioners. This ensures maximum safety for your child and a smoother process.

On the Day of the Procedure

On the day of your child’s appointment:

  • A trained professional will give your child general anesthesia, either through a mask or a small needle (IV)
  • Your child will fall into a deep sleep and feel no pain
  • Our dentist will begin the dental work while your child is sleeping
  • We will monitor your child’s heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure the entire time

We do everything we can to make sure your child is safe, comfortable, and well cared for.

After the Procedure

Once the dental treatment is finished:

  • Will awake in a quiet recovery room
  • It is normal for children to feel sleepy, confused, or a little upset at first
  • Some children may have a mild sore throat or feel sick to their stomach

We will instruct you on looking after your child at home, including:

  • What your child can eat or drink
  • How to help them rest and feel better
  • What signs to watch for, such as fever or upset stomach

If you have any questions afterward, our team is here to help.
